Honey had never believed in magic but all the evidence was right in front of her. She still couldn’t believe that Rook was stuck in a bottle, his soul withering away. She just kept staring at him, mesmerised until all her senses flooded back. Honey had to save Rook before he died. Unfortunately that was easier said than done. Honey didn’t even know how to save someone who was dying. Even a nurse wouldn’t know how to get Rook back from withering away. Honey frantically looked around the room for something useful but didn’t know which potion would help her! Before she could pull a spell book off the shelf, she heard a THUD! It carried on and seemed to be getting louder and louder and that’s when Honey realised that those were footsteps. The witch was approaching.
Honey muffled a scream. Where was she to hide? She spotted the bubbling cauldron with the potion for taking over the world and hid behind it.
“Ha!Ha! Once I take over the world, I will kill that King for banishing me to the other side of the country.”
The witch stirred the pot vigorously and then grinned at Rook baring her yellow teeth.
“Boy, once I extract your strength I might be kind enough to use ¾ of it so some of you would still live. When that happens maybe only your legs would be alive. Definitely not your biceps, I’ll make sure of that! Now, only if you behave. After I use some of your strength, if I do let you go, all I have to do is smash the glass and whatever part is left will reform easily. I am just too kind.”
The witch cackled and went off to fetch some more ingredients. Honey emerged from her hiding place and walked up to Rook’s bottle.
“Ha!” A voice made Honey jolt. She turned around to face the witch and gasped.
“I thought I smelt a human. So I pretended that I was going to get some ingredients! So I suppose you’re the boy’s friend who has come to save him. Well that won’t work. I’ll hold you a prisoner just like the boy.” Honey growled, snatched the bottle and dropped it. The glass shattered everywhere. Rook reformed back to his mortal self. He stared at himself, relieved to be back and not in heaven watching the witch take over the world with his muscles. The witch’s anger unfurled inside her.
“ You fools! You think you’ve won this. Don’t worry I will get you and your friend!” Rook plunged towards the witch but she just made a shooing movement and Rook fell back onto the bookshelf and all the books fell onto him one by one.
“Now I’ll deal with you, you sneaky brat. Weren’t you taught manners in that village of yours?
But Rook rose up and shouted, ”You think you’re done with me?” The witch just laughed and said he had spirit and then thought her powers wouldn’t be enough to defeat him so seized a wand and fired at him.
It missed Rook by inches. Honey tried to help but Rook firmly said, “ Sorry Honey but I can’t let you get hurt. You saved me and that means the world to me. So now you must let me save you.”
Honey’s eyes filled with tears. Rook really liked her the way she wanted. The witch always seemed to be missing Rook as he was always dodging and diving.
“You’re flexible. I’ll give you that boy. But eventually you’ll get tired and give up or even fall asleep!”
“I don’t intend to.” And Rook poured a potion labelled ‘ The Mouse’, he had been clutching, onto the bewildered witch and slowly but surely the witch began to shrink and sprout whiskers.
Rook grabbed Honey’s hand and they ran!!! The village was getting closer and closer……but wait, was that really their home?
